Is the Conservative Party hiding something?
On Monday Heat Street asked whether Theresa May’s new chief of staff Nick Timothy is caught up in the ongoing police inquiry into allegations of Conservative electoral fraud.
Specifically, Timothy’s potential involvement would relate to breaches believed to have taken place in the seat of South Thanet during the 2015 election, where the Tories defeated Nigel Farage.
Nick Timothy masterminded this campaign.
The Conservatives are accused of having spent £29,000 during the campaign – twice as much as the £15,000 legal limit.
Half of this £29,000 was spent by campaigners and activists staying in the Royal Harbour Hotel in Ramsgate.
Not having had any response to Monday’s story, we asked the Tories about this again.
A spokesman replied, but the party is being tight-lipped.
All the spokesman would say is: “All spending has been correctly recorded in accordance with the law.”
This is a bog standard line which the Tories have been trotting out for months.
Where did Nick Timothy stay during the campaign? The Tories won’t say.
What are Theresa May’s thoughts on this looming scandal? Ditto.
A Ukip spokesman believes the truth will out.
He said: “Now that David Cameron is no longer prime minister, the electoral fraud story has been blown wide open. There is no longer any need for the Conservatives to try to protect anyone associated with these allegations and we would expect Theresa May to be open in the way she deals with this. We look forward to hearing the outcome of the various police investigations.”
