Residents of an Irish town are being deluged with calls meant for an X-rated TV channel thanks to a mix-up with phone numbers.

Viewers of the British pornography channel Babestation have found themselves connected to residents of Westport, County Mayo – rather than the “super filthy babes” promised by the channel.

The reason for the wrong connection is that the TV station’s premium-rate numbers are only separated from those of ordinary Westport homes by an international dialing code.

Babestation fans in Ireland who forget to prefix their number with +44 – the UK code – will reach their unsuspecting countrymen instead of the models they hoped for.

The embarrassing mix-up was revealed by the Irish Independent, which reported that local politicians are trying to force regulators to resolve the issue.

Michael Ring told the paper that the issue was causing “huge distress” – and leading some residents receiving calls after midnight to fear that they call was about a personal tragedy like the death of a family member.

Irish communications regulators reportedly said they couldn’t fix the problem, while their counterparts in the UK are investigating.
