Security at Windsor Castle during the Changing the Guard ceremony is to be increased in the aftermath of last week’s terror attack in central London.

Police said barriers will be placed around the Queen’s residence in Berkshire to support existing road closures while the military spectacle is under way.

A spokesman said the changes were “proportionate and necessary”, adding there was “no specific threat to Windsor”.

The barriers will be put up ahead of the next Changing the Guard, scheduled for tomorrow.

The 45-minute ceremony, which is popular with tourists, involves troops dressed in a bearskin hat and a red tunic being replaced by fresh sentries led by a regimental band.

In January Heat Street reported that the event was being scaled back temporarily in light of increased terror activity in mainland Europe.

Assistant Chief Constable Dave Hardcastle of Thames Valley Police said: “While there is no intelligence to indicate a specific threat to Windsor, recent events in Westminster clearly highlight the need for extra security measures to be introduced.

“The force believes that it is proportionate and necessary to put in place extra security measures to further protect and support the public and the guard change.
This is consistent with security deployments in London.

“Preventative measures such as these have been put in place across the UK over the past 10 years at various events.

“The national threat level remains severe, which it has been since 2014, and I would urge the public to be alert to the threat of terror attacks but not alarmed, and to remain vigilant.”

A lone jihadi called Khalid Masood killed three people when he drove a 4×4 into pedestrians last Wednesday on Westminster Bridge. He then fatally stabbed a police officer in the grounds of the Houses of Parliament before being shot dead. About forty people were injured in the attack.
