A Dutch gymnast has been kicked out of the Olympics as punishment for going on a late-night drinking session in Rio to celebrate a victory.
Yuri van Gelder, a former world champion in the rings event, broke strict rules for athletes by venturing out into the host city after a qualifying event.
Van Gelder, 33, was reportedly out until the early hours of the morning getting drunk, and infuriating his Dutch handlers.
The European team has especially strict regulations for its athletes. Not only are they banned from any alcohol consumption, but they also cannot leave the team base between certain times.
A Dutch sporting official called the breach “unacceptable” and “a disaster” before confirming van Gelder – nicknamed the “Lord of the Rings” – would be banned from continuing.
It is not the first time the athlete has fallen foul of substance rules. In 2009 he was suspended from sport after admitting to taking cocaine.
He also lost his job with the Dutch military for breaking their drugs rules.
