A Jewish group has alerted police in London to a road sign which has been put up in its neighborhood warning people to “beware of Jews”.
The sign (main picture) shows the figure of an orthodox Jewish man wearing a traditional Fedora hat. The image is contained within a red border – the standard warning signal on British road signs.
It was found 200 yards from a synagogue in Stamford Hill, north London, on Tuesday by a member of a local Jewish neighborhood group, Shomrim N E London, and then reported to police.
Barry Bard, Shomrim’s operational supervisor in Stamford Hill, said it was the first time such a sign has ever been seen, as far as he knows. He said it had caused considerable alarm in the community because of the meticulous planning behind it.
He said: “The people of Stamford Hill are very sadly used to instances of anti-Semitic hate crime, but most of those times it will be verbal abuse or even assault. A lot of the time it will be more of a person-to-person kind of thing, or graffiti, which is more unprofessional. The person who planned [this sign] has obviously gone to an effort to cause alarm and distress to local people.”
The local authority, Hackney Council, is expected to remove the sign today.
