Police in Australia are looking for a man they say carried out a “sickening attack” on an ibis in Brisbane’s Central Business District.

The man allegedly captured the ibis on George Street about 5.30am on Saturday and strangled the bird until it died.

He then approached members of the public walking by and threatened them with the dead bird, police said.

Police officers went to the scene and spoke to a man. They are now looking for anyone who saw the incident, or may have footage, to contact them.

District duty officer Senior Sergeant Neville Mills said police took matters of animal cruelty extremely seriously.

“Attacks of this nature will not be tolerated and those responsible will be dealt with to the full extent of the law,” he said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
