Mystery snipers have started hunting swans belonging to Queen Elizabeth II in the English countryside.

The unknown attackers have shot at least 12 of the animals, leaving them with bloody wounds.

All the birds were shot in either the head or neck, likely by high-powered air rifles. Two swans were killed and the other ten were injured. Some were left blind or have shattered beaks.

Locals who live near one of the Queen’s most spectacular castles, in Windsor, Berkshire, started spotting wounded swans about a week ago.

Since then reports have steadily increased. Wildlife experts at Swan Support, a rescue center based nearby, released photographs of the wounded animals.

Under ancient English tradition, the Queen has rights of ownership over all swans in the River Thames. The 12 victims were marked as her property with a ceremonial ring on their legs.

Speaking to Heat Street, Wendy Hermon, who runs the charity, said: “We’ve seen every injury under the sun before – but these attacks are systematic.

“The police have upped their patrols in response, and the Queen’s Swan Marker is also on the case.”

Residents have also offered to form their own patrols to defend the birds.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said: “These are very distressing incidents in which defenceless animals have clearly been targeted.

“Two of these animals have been killed and several others have been left severely injured.

“I understand that these incidents are very upsetting for people and we are carrying out an investigation in order to locate those responsible.”
