Moroccan-Born Teen Will Serve 5 Years for Raping Woman, 90, in Germany

A court in Germany has convicted a Moroccan-born man aged 19 of raping and strangling a 90-year-old woman and sentenced him to five years in prison.

The Dusseldorf state court convicted the defendant under juvenile law of rape, robbery and bodily harm.

In compliance with German privacy laws, the teenager cannot be identified in full and has been named only as Souhayl M.

A surveillance image (pictured) of him was released by police after the violent incident.

The shocking attack happened one Sunday in October 2016 when the elderly victim was pounced on after visiting St Lambertus church in Dusseldorf. It was claimed that the teenager demanded money from the lady.

When she said she did not have any money, he dragged her outside and raped her in a courtyard before strangling her and pulling her hair. He also stole the key to her home and apparently asked for her address, though it is not believed he ever visited the property.

Police said they traced the man using DNA evidence. An existing sample of his DNA was on record following a robbery in May last year.

During the trial, the Moroccan-born man admitted to committing the attack and said he had been drinking alcohol and taking cocaine beforehand.

He apparently spent some of his childhood in Spain, where he had convictions for drugs offenses. It was reported that he said he went to Germany in 2016 to dodge serving a prison term in Spain.
