A giant banner protesting against the election of Donald Trump was hung off one of London’s best-known bridges this morning.
The 80-ft sign bearing the words “Act Now! Build Bridges Not Walls” was unveiled on Tower Bridge at 8.30am (pictured) and was one of several demonstrations against Trump staged by left wing activists in the final hours before he is sworn in as the 45th American president.
The activists said they planned to hang similar signs off every major bridge in the British capital today in an attempt to remind the incoming US leader of the importance of tolerance.
Similar events were due to take place in other British cities including Edinburgh, Manchester and Brighton.
Nona Hurkmans of the Bridges not Walls group said in a statement: “We won’t let the politics of hate peddled by the likes of Donald Trump take hold.”
It is not clear whether any of the activists involved in today’s protest at Tower Bridge was entitled to vote in the US election. And aside from their refusal to accept a democratic result, it is also noteworthy that when President Obama threatened Britain a few months ago, saying it would find itself at the “back of the queue” in any future trade deal with the US if it voted for Brexit, no such protests were staged by these groups highlighting Obama’s tacit bullying and obvious intolerance.
