Singer and Hillary Clinton surrogate Katy Perry danced with burning effigies of British Prime Minister Theresa May and US President Donald Trump in a crass attempt at a political statement at last night’s Brit Awards in London.
The pop star performed her new song Chained to the Rhythm, which many take to be a political dig at the fake news phenomenon and the consequent Trump’s victory.

Her performance featured two skeletons dressed as Mrs May and Mr Trump, supposedly replicating their first meeting in Washington last month. The massive skeletons held hands before suddenly exploding into fire – a reference to the bizarre moment during the meeting when Trump unexpectedly grabbed Mrs May’s hand.
Much backstage talk about @katyperry's @BRITs show. Surely not @realDonaldTrump and @theresa_may? @SkipMarley pic.twitter.com/mS9maAVDoM

Unluckily, for Perry, last night’s show didn’t go as well as the Trump/May love-in – one of her backing dancers fell of the stage:

The politically-charged song included lyrics alluding to President Trump’s plans for building a wall along the border with Mexico. Perry’s sidekick, Skip Marley, rapped during the song: “It is my desire, break down the walls to connect, inspire”.
The song also includes calls for uprisings against politicians: “Up in your high place, liars, time is ticking for the empire. The truth they feed is feeble.”
“They stumbling and fumbling and we’re about to riot. They woke up, they woke up the lions.”
Perry was an ardent supporter of Mrs Clinton’s attempt at taking the White House. During the campaign, she took off her clothes to encourage her millennial fans to turn out to the polls. According to her, she was “using her body as click bait” to “change the world.”
