UPDATE: Jo Cox has died. Police announced Thursday evening that the shooting had been fatal.

Labour MP Jo Cox was shot Thursday afternoon, and is in critical condition in hospital.

The attack, coming in a frenzied period of campaigning from both sides of the EU referendum debate, stopped UK politics in its tracks.

Both campaigns have frozen their activities:

Cox’s husband, Brendan, has not commented publicly on the shooting – but posted a photograph of his wife at a pro-EU event the previous day:

Prime Minister David Cameron, who was due to speak in Gibraltar this evening for the Remain side, is returning to Britain instead:

His Vote Leave rival Boris Johnson, who was on the road in Norwich, also stopped for the day and offered his condolences.

UKIP leader Nigel Farage, who had earlier unveiled a new poster campaign in Westminster, did the same:

Labour party leader, who had earlier been speaking for Remain in Sheffield, did likewise.

Other prominent Labour figures also spoke out:

Cox remains in hospital. A 52-year-old man has been arrested.
