Emojis showing gender-neutral faces, a woman wearing a hijab and a breastfeeding woman have been confirmed for imminent release.
The new characters, catering to the tastes of the social justice movement, are joined by a host of fantastical variants like dinosaurs, vampires and mermaids.
Unicode – the internet body which runs the emoji library – announced the final versions of the new additions in a blog post this week.
Every new human character (including elves, mermaids and vampires) will be available in five different skin tones – as has been standard since racially-diverse emojis were released in 2015.
Overall there will be 56 new characters on the menu. Other offbeat additions include a hedgehog, a T-rex, steak, pies and the flag of Scotland.
Heat Street previously reported on draft plans for the gender-neutral emojis, which have now been finalized.
Unicode has released code for the new characters to developers.
The new emojis will be available to use from June this year.
