Does Donald Trump have a death wish?

No sooner has the US State Department issued a travel alert warning American citizens against visiting Europe this summer because of the terror risk than the presumptive GOP candidate announces he is to travel to Scotland.

He will open his new golf course and hotel at Turnberry in Ayshire on June 24 – the day after the EU referendum.

Aside from the terror threat, it is not as if Trump can be confident of a warm welcome when he arrives in the UK anyway.

Conservative MP Sarah Wollaston said Britain needs the visit like “a bucket of cold sick”.

In December Trump called for a “total and complete” temporary shutdown of US borders to Muslims following the terror attack in San Bernardino, California, in which a married Muslim couple murdered 14 people and seriously injured 22 others.

A petition seeking to ban him from entering the UK has to date generated almost 600,000 signatures.

Politicians held a parliamentary debate about the proposed ban.

The petition triggered wider arguments about freedom of speech.

There are suggestions that Trump may use his visit this month to meet David Cameron, who recently made disobliging comments about him.

Cameron has refused to apologise for calling Trump “stupid” following his idea of banning Muslims from the US.

A Number 10 source said: “Candidates often come through the country. We are more than happy to meet him on that basis. There are no firm dates set up at the moment. There has been no formal contact.”

However, given the timing of Trump’s trip, it remains perfectly possible that Cameron will not any longer be prime minister by the time the tycoon arrives in Britain.

If Britain votes for Brexit, Cameron is widely believed to be prepared to quit Downing Street immediately.
