An Indonesian woman was flogged 100 times today in front of a cheering crowd in Indonesia after being found guilty of spending time in close proximity with a man other than her husband.
The 34-year-old was decreed to have broken Islamic regulations and thrashed on a stage.
It happened in Aceh province – the only part of the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country that imposes sharia law. Floggings take place there regularly for “crimes” including gambling, drinking alcohol and gay sex.
According to website Free Malaysia Today the woman screamed in agony as she was caned.
She was one of five people — two women and three men — flogged in front of a mosque in the provincial capital Banda Aceh.
The site reported that she was “lashed seven times with a rattan cane by a man wearing long robes and a hood, with just slits for the eyes.”
Apparently the woman screamed “It hurts so bad,” as she was beaten.
A man aged 32, in whose company she was caught, was also beaten seven times.
Two university students, both 19, received 100 lashes of the cane after they confessed to sex outside marriage.
And a man found guilty of sex outside marriage was flogged 22 times.
His partner, who is two-months pregnant, is still waiting to learn her fate after facing trial at an Islamic court.
Aceh, a semi-autonomous province on the island of Sumatra, introduced sharia law in 2001.
