Andrea Leadsom is through to the final ballot which means that either she, or Home Secretary Theresa May, is guaranteed to be the next Prime Minister – and the UK will follow Margaret Thatcher with a second woman PM.
Add in the prospect of Hillary Clinton, leading in all polls against Donald Trump, and Beyonce’s “Who Run the World? Girls” song is about to come true.
Leadsom is much beloved of Conservative party members, beating Theresa May in a poll because she is seen as more likely to deliver Brexit than her most experienced, Remain-backing rival.
Jacob Rees-Mogg and other much loved Gove supporters immediately switched to Leadsom, as did MEP Daniel Hannan who led the Vote Leave effort .
Hillary Clinton has yet to respond, but her salutation to the second woman at number ten will be interesting. Heat Street predicts that Leadsom, not May, will be selected – the bookies were wrong about Brexit, too.
The development has to be good for Hillary and bad for Trump. The UK Prime Minister will be selected before the US Presidential election, causing US women voters to feel a thrill of pride as the UK selects a new woman to lead the nation – and to ask themselves why the USA hasĀ neverĀ elected a woman to lead it. They may well think that it is time for a no-nonsense female at the top of government. The ‘sensible’ image of both Leadsom and May also aligns with that of Clinton and is likely to make the bombast of ‘Saddam Hussein – what a guy!’ Trump look poor and shabby in contrast.
