Bill Clinton Joins Tony Blair To Oppose Brexit

First President Obama stuck his nose into British politics, now Bill Clinton is to do the same thing.

The former President is gearing up to visit Britain where he will plead with voters to stay in the European Union in the referendum on June 23.

Clinton is to join forces with close friend and political soulmate Tony Blair, who is overseeing the trip.

The plan is that the pair will make a public appearance together arguing the case for opposing Brexit.

Sources said Clinton will visit the UK once Hillary Clinton has secured the Democratic nomination for November’s presidential election.

Jake Sullivan, Mrs Clinton’s senior policy adviser, told the Observer in London: “Hillary Clinton believes the transatlantic co-operation is essential, and that co-operation is strongest when Europe is united. She has always valued a strong United Kingdom in a strong EU. And she values a strong British voice in the EU.”

But will Clinton be wasting his time?

Obama’s visit to the UK last month had a negative effect on the polls, as far as those who wish to Remain in the EU are concerned.

Infamously, Obama said Britain would put the UK at “the back of the queue” in any trade deal with the US if it left the EU, triggering anger.

A YouGov poll last week for The Times put the pro-Brexit Leave campaign two points ahead of the pro-EU Remain campaign despite Obama’s intervention.

Worse still for the Remain camp, Bill Clinton is far less popular than Obama, according to YouGov.

Whereas the incumbent president is trusted by 35 per cent of voters in the EU debate, Clinton is trusted by just 14 per cent – with 56 per cent saying they distrust him.
