Bernie Sanders has been named the ‘Oldie Should-Have-Been of the Year’ at an awards ceremony in London.
The 75-year-old senator’s attempt to defeat Hillary Clinton in order to stand as the Democratic Party’s official candidate in the 2016 presidential election was recognized with the tongue-in-cheek award, given by UK senior citizens’ magazine The Oldie.
Sen Sanders was unable to attend the ceremony – held at old-fashioned English restaurant Simpson’s-in-the-Strand – in person.
Instead, he sent his older brother, Larry, to accept the prize on his behalf.
Larry, 81, lives in Oxfordshire and is also politically active in his capacity as a health spokesman for the left-leaning Green Party in the UK.
He said Bernie was too busy campaigning against Donald Trump’s administration to make the trip to Britain yesterday but reported that he was delighted with his win.
Other victors included Oscar-winning actress turned left-wing politician Glenda Jackson, and 97-year-old scientist and futurist James Lovelock.
