More than half of British Muslims say they do not know who was responsible for the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center while almost one third blame the US government for the atrocity, according to new data.
In what has been described as the “most extensive research of British Muslims ever conducted”, a survey of more than 3,000 Muslims revealed their surprising propensity for conspiracy.
The work was carried out over recent months by polling company ICM and Policy Exchange, the right-of-centre British think tank.
52% of those surveyed said they did not know who was culpable for 9/11.
31% blamed the American administration of George W. Bush.
7% blamed Jews – and just 4% blamed al-Qaeda.
This compares with 71% of the general population who blamed al-Qaeda, with 10 per cent blaming the US, 1% blaming Jews and 16% saying they are unsure.
According to the latest UK census, which took place in 2011, there are 2.7 million Muslims in Britain, accounting for 4.8% of the total population.
The ICM/Policy Exchange research, which involved focus groups across Britain, concluded that 53% of Muslims want to “fully integrate with non-Muslims in all aspects of life”. An additional 37% said that they wanted to integrate on “most things”.
