Michelin-Star Chef Daniel Boulud Takes Foodies on Immersive VR Food Experience

In the latest food-meets-technology development, Samsung has created a series called 360° Meals at Samsung to see what happens when food and virtual reality come together.

Daniel Boulud, owner of several restaurants including Michelin-starred Daniel, recently let attendees in NYC catch a behind-the-scenes look at his process. Audience members watched a short video while wearing Samsung Gear VR headsets. The video showed the process from prep in the kitchen to completed dishes on the table. In this way, each viewer could feel as if they were right there in the kitchen watching each ingredient being carefully prepared.

Afterwards, the audience watched a cooking demonstration and sampled food (‘Boulud’s special interpretation of the classic croque-monsieur, with black truffle’).

In a press release, the company explains that it “started Club des Chefs in 2013” in order to gather highly talented chefs from the around the world to “understand what is needed for great cooking and to create the Chef Collection line of leading kitchen appliances.”

These appliances were the ones that Boulud used during his cooking demonstration. While the experience of these kinds of demonstrations is usually a group one, the realm of VR has mostly been about individual experiences. 360° Meals at Samsung proves that VR can also be used for group settings to create an added dimension of interactivity.

With the headsets, each audience member could feel like a part of the kitchen—and discuss their experience with others who felt the same way.
