Google Ads Pushing EgyptAir Tickets in Wake of Flight MS804 Crash

As headlines related to the crash of EgyptAir flight MS804 dominate the morning — and presumably the morning’s search traffic — Google’s ad algorithms are all-business:

Ads served to Google users in New York City list prices for EgyptAir flights to places such as Dubai, Mumbai, Istanbul, and Johannesburg. (But not Cairo, seemingly.)

Google’s ad guidelines state the following as to when ads may constitute “Offensive or inappropriate content”:

Capitalizing on sensitive events

Content that may be deemed as capitalizing on or lacking reasonable sensitivity towards a natural disaster, conflict, death, or other tragic event

Examples: Appearing to profit from a tragic event with no discernible benefit to the victims.
