Univision executives urged the Hillary Clinton campaign to be more aggressive in attacking Donald Trump as an anti-Hispanic bigot, according to emails published by WikiLeaks on Wednesday.
Campaign chairman John Podesta emailed other Clinton aides in July 2015 to relay the fact that Haim Saban, an Israeli-American media mogul and billionaire campaign donor, thought the campaign was “under reacting” to Donald Trump’s controversial remarks about Hispanic immigrants.
Saban, who has donated more than $10 million to the Clinton Foundation, owns the Spanish-language Univision network, which has close ties to the Clinton campaign.
In the email exchange published by WikiLeaks, top Clinton handler Huma Abedin chimed in to note that Saban’s concern about the campaign’s messaging “means he’s hearing it from his Univision colleagues.”
Abedin also appeared to suggest planting a question at a media availability in order to give Hillary a chance to follow Saban’s advice by attacking Trump more aggressively.
Campaign communications aide Xochitl Hinjosa wrote back to say she would be happy to work with someone to “get a question in.”
