Trump Likes Tweet Claiming Attorney General Sessions Committed Perjury

Is President Trump warming up to his fellow Saturday Night Live veteran Al Franken? Or was it just a lapsus calami of his famously small fingers?

Last night, Trump “liked” a tweet from Fox Nation with a headline reading “Franken Says He Thinks Sessions Committed Perjury“. The “liked” story is about Senator Al Franken, a liberal Democrat, accusing Attorney General Sessions of perjuring himself during his confirmation hearing when he claimed he had no meetings with Russian officials.

Ex-SNL star Franken is urging Sessions to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee and clarify his response regarding contacts with Russian officials. The senator also said he believes the Attorney General “perjured himself.”

It’s unlikely that the President actually agrees with Franken that Sessions perjured himself. According to multiple reports, Trump was angered last week when Sessions recused himself from investigations into inquiries into Russian meddling in the U-S election, due to the controversy swirling around his testimony. Trump reportedly did not believe a recusal was necessary.

Trump also tweeted during the controversial that “Jeff Sessions is an honest man. He did not say anything wrong.”

Sessions got into hot water last week following The Washington Post reporting that he had a meeting with the Russian ambassador to the U.S., Sergey Kislyak, back in 2016 when he was an Alabama Senator.

Prominent Democrats in Congress have as a result urged Sessions to resign from the Justice Department. The Attorney General, however, denies committing perjury, writing “My answer was correct” in a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

“I was surprised by the allegations in the question, which I had not heard before. I answered the question, which asked about a ‘continuing exchange of information during the campaign between Trump’s surrogates and intermediaries for the Russian government,’ honestly,” he added.

“I did not mention communications I had had with the Russian ambassador over the years because the question did not ask about them.”

Senator Franken reacted to Session’s letter, suggesting his defense was insufficient and said: “That’s a ridiculous response. It’s not a clarification at all.”
