Two people have died and a policeman was stabbed in a hit-and-run terror attack on the grounds of the UK Parliament.
The attacker, who has yet to be identified, drove a car down a nearby bridge, mounted the sidewalk and slammed into several pedestrians, killing at least two.
He then crashed into railings protecting the Houses of Parliament, got out of the car, charged and stabbed a policeman. Other officers then shot him.
According to a medic at a nearby hospital, two of those hit by the car have died, and others have “catastrophic injuries”.
The status of the attacker and the policeman he stabbed are unclear.
A police statement Wednesday afternoon confirmed that they are treating the incident as an act of terrorism.
The attacker struck around 2.35pm GMT, shortly after Prime Minister’s Questions – the highlight of the political week – was held in the Palace of Westminster.
Prime Minister Theresa May was rushed from the building by her security detail, while other MPs were put on lockdown inside the debating chamber.
Proceedings in Parliament were cancelled for the rest of the day.
Emergency response teams flooded the area around Parliament in the wake of the attack.
It is not clear exactly how many people were hurt – media reports claim around a dozen people were injured.
