Republican Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska will miss his party’s national convention in Cleveland later this month because he is planning to “take his kids to watch some dumpster fires across the state,” Sasse’s spokesman said Thursday.
These dumpster fires, the spokesman added, “enjoy more popularity than the current front-runners” of the major political parties.
Sasse is not the only Republican Senator planning to skip the GOP nomination. According to The Hill, at least 15 other GOP Senators will not travel to Cleveland to witness the presumptive nomination of Donald Trump; six more are undecided.
Jeff Flake of Arizona said he won’t be at the convention because “I’ve got to mow my lawn.” Flake, who is one of Trump’s most outspoken GOP critics, got into a testy exchange with the real estate mogul during a meeting with Republican lawmakers on Thursday.
According to the Washington Post, Flake urged Trump to tone down his rhetoric and stop attacking Mexicans. Trump responded by predicting that Flake would lose his campaign for reelection. (Flake is not on the ballot this year.)
“I want to support the nominee. I really do,” Flake told reporters after the meeting. “I just can’t support him given the things that he’s said.”
