An American caught trying to sneak into Russia because he was “looking for a better life” has been deported, according to the Siberian Times. It is unclear if his actions were related to the recent U.S. presidential election.
Julio Prieto, a 29-year-old insurance salesman from Colorado, was denied legal entry into Russia, from Kazakhstan, because he lacked a proper visa. He was apprehended by border patrol agents in September when he tried to cross the border illegally.
Prieto, who was born in Mexico, told authorities he was “looking for a better life,” but it is not known whether he was a disillusioned Hillary Clinton supporter who, unlike Lena Dunham and other celebrities, was actually following through on a pledge to leave the country if Donald Trump was elected president.
“He had been hoping for Russian hospitality, but he failed to get it and was deeply disappointed,” a Russian official said, according to local reports.
Prietto spent several weeks in jail before pleading guilty to a charge of illegally entering the country. He was issued a small fine, about $30, and the Russian government paid to have him flown back to New York.
Lena Dunham, meanwhile, was spotted in the Arizona wilderness partaking in a spirit quest after the election. She reportedly asked the rocks for “guidance.”
