The mother of murdered DNC staffer Seth Rich, who was shot and killed in DC last month, has called on her community to help with the unsolved case.
“If you saw anyone in the area… if you know of people that came home after 4.30 in the early morning, if you know of anyone that looks like they’d been in a fight…” she said.
The Metropolitan Police are currently offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in Rich’s murder, but the investigation has yet to yield any suspects. The DC police chief told NBC News4 that it is possible Rich was killed in a botched robbery although his wallet, watch or phone were not taken.
Rich’s unsolved murder has cast a pall of fear over Washington’s up-and-coming Bloomingdale neighborhood, where Rich lived and died. And with no concrete information made public, unproven conspiracy theories fester in online forums, claiming that everyone from Debbie Wasserman Schultz to Hillary Clinton played a part in the murder.
Shortly after the killing, Redditors and social media users were pursuing a “lead” saying that Rich was en route to the FBI that fateful morning, apparently intending to speak to special agents about an “ongoing court case” possibly involving the Clinton family.
Further “investigation” dug up no such court case and there is no evidence whatsoever that Rich, who did voter outreach work for the DNC, had any knowledge of alleged Clinton misdeeds.
Another theory posits that Rich was the one who leaked the DNC emails to Wikileaks which led to Schultz’s ouster. This theory is based on Julian Assange’s recent ITV appearance, in which he scoffed at the idea that Russian hackers could be responsible for the data dump, and said that “anyone” within the Democrats’ organization could easily have sent Wikileaks the embarrassing e-mails.
The latest conspiracy theory comes from Reddit’s Trump-supporting community r/the_donald, where Redditors are claiming that the recent death of Sen. Tim Kaine aide Joe Montano is connected to Rich’s murder. The theory goes that Montano may have had some workplace ties to Rich, leading to his untimely end. Montano’s parents say however that their son had hypertension and appears to have died from a heart attack.
