Terrified parents whose children attend Barron Trump’s pricey New York City prep school packed a contentious meeting Monday morning to confront the Secret Service with their safety concerns.
More than 200 people attended the meeting at 10 year old Barron’s school, on a leafy block just off Central Park. Barron and his mother, Melania, are not relocating to Washington next month so he can continue his schooling in New York.
At the meeting, which was also attended by school officials and representatives from the Secret Service, many school parents expressed their fears about the added security risks that Barron’s presence now poses. One parent pointed out that Trump has said the U.S. should “take out the families” of ISIS members and that this threat made Barron’s school a terrorist target.
One parent who attended the meeting described the Secret Service officers’ responses as “evasive”.
School officials told the panicky parents they would be investing more money in security, but parents expressed concern that this meant they would be on the hook financially. Tuition at the school is currently more than $46,000 a year, making it the priciest school in New York City.
Sources tell Heat Street that since Election Day, there’s been a daily Secret Service presence inside and outside Barron’s school, on Manhattan’s exclusive Upper West Side, and that teachers there are frustrated with the intrusion.
Even before the presidential election, Barron’s school was already grappling with neighborhood complaints due to the large number of chauffeured SUVs dropping off and picking up extremely wealthy children each school day. New prohibitions have gone into place — including banning left turns near the school, preventing vehicles from blocking a bike lane, and installing a speed bump — but the addition of Barron’s Secret Service detail is only making things worse.
Another safety concern has centered on the threat from a tween gang, Money Comes First, a Crips-affiliated outfit which operates steps from Barron’s school. The gang has preyed on wealthy schoolchildren for years, stealing their smartphones and bags when school lets out, and Money Comes First’s intra-gang violence has also been linked to bloody stabbings and shootings in the immediate area. Just last week, a nanny pushing a stroller one block from Barron’s school was knocked down and mugged at lunchtime. Her alleged assailants were arrested and it’s not clear if they are linked to Money Comes First.
Whether Barron and Melania will relocate to Washington for the 2017-2018 school year remains to be determined. In recent decades, Presidents’ children have attended Sidwell Friends School in Washington which is very experienced in handling security matters.
