Newt Gingrich watched a movie this week. After watching the movie — London Has Fallen, starring Gerard Butler — the former Speaker of the House tweeted his thoughts.

Mockery ensued. In case you haven’t seen it — and most people haven’t, to be fair — London Has Fallen is a poorly reviewed film about a Pakistani terrorist who carries out a coordinated assassination plot against world leaders who have gathered in London for the British Prime Minister’s funeral after his death under mysterious circumstances. The U.S. president escapes, and mayhem ensues. It’s a Hollywood film, etc.

Sonny Bunch recounts a scene that reflects the general tenor of the movie:

There’s an amusing scene in London Has Fallen that takes place after London has indeed fallen. Secret Service agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) captures one of the terrorists who are trying to kill President Benjamin Asher (Aaron Eckhart). After torturing him for some intel and getting the guy’s boss on the phone, Banning rams his knife home so the guy on the other end of the line can hear his buddy gurgle his last. “Was that really necessary?” the president asks. “No” comes the snappy reply.

Twitter users pounced on Gingrich because, let’s face it, most of them have nothing better to do with their lives. It was still rather amusing. They mocked Gingrich, a serial philanderer and potential Donald Trump running mate, for his characteristic brand of thought leadership and trying to find into deeper meaning in the plot of a Hollywood film.
