Days after President Donald Trump began a public feud with the Mexican government over funding for his proposed border wall, his wife, former supermodel Melania Trump, appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair Mexico.
The latest issue features a cover photo of Melania pretending to eat fancy jewelry like spaghetti. She is described as “La nueva Jackie Kennedy.”
The cover photo, and the accompanying interview, are not new. It originally appeared in the April 2016 issue of GQ Magazine, which is owned by the same parent company (Conde Nast) as Vanity Fair.
The timing of the release is causing a stir in light of President Trump’s feud with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto. Trump has insisted that Mexico will fund construction of the wall he wants to build on the southern U.S. border. House Republicans have estimated a total cost of up to $15 billion.
On Thursday, Peña Nieto abruptly cancelled a scheduled meeting with Trump after the U.S. president suggested there was no point in holding the meeting if Mexico refused to pay for the wall.
Social media users expressed their opinions about the cover. Many were perplexed. “This gets more bizarre by the day…. is Melania doing this to troll her husband? She must have known how odd it would look,” wrote Jolly Confused.
“*For once* Melania Trump’s permanently confused expression matches an understandable reaction to what the photographer has asked her to do,” wrote one British journalist, remarking upon the bizarre jewelry consumption motif.
