Melania Trump, a former supermodel from Slovenia and The Donald’s third wife, wowed attendees gathered at the Republican national convention in Cleveland on Monday with a powerful speech about why her husband should be president.
“With all my heart, I know he will make a great and lasting difference,” said Melania, who looked stunning in a fancy white dress. “He knows how to win.”
Donald agreed, just moments before, when he made a dramatic entrance to introduce her. “We’re going to win so big,” the GOP nominee to eager crowd. The happy coupled kissed, but it wasn’t even that awkward.
One of her biggest applause lines came when Melania mentioned how becoming a United States citizen, which she did in 2006, was “the greatest privilege on Earth.”
Melania has kept a low profile on the campaign trail thus far, and many wondered how she would handle the glare of the primetime spotlight. Mrs. Trump doesn’t give many speeches these days, but she does have experience walking the runway and posing for magazine covers.
Her speech at the convention is drawing comparisons to the one Hillary Clinton gave in support of her husband’s candidacy at the Democratic Convention in 1992.
In this case, Melania is certain to compare favorably. Although then-future first lady Hillary Clinton did appear at her party’s convention in 1992, she did not give a speech. That’s pretty weird, right?
It’s probably because she’s suffered from that lack of “likability” for a long, longtime. During her husband’s first run for president, Hillary was being described in the pages of Vanity Fair as “the Arkansas governor’s controversial wife.” Polling showed that voters had a more favorable opinion of then-First Lady Barbara Bush.
It was in 1992 that Hillary made her infamous comments about how she “could have stayed home and baked cookies” instead of pursuing a legal career, which even a lot of Democrats found to be offensive to American homemakers.
On Monday night in Cleveland, Melania knocked it out of the park.
Meanwhile, Hillary’s unfavorable rating is at an all-time high.
