All Ivanka Trump wanted was an ear cuff. But a simple $84 purchase from tony New York “sculptural” jeweler became a political squabble, when the store decided to take its frustrations with Ivanka’s father out on her.

Lady Grey, which says it has catered to the likes of Beyonce and Selena Gomez, fulfilled Ivanka’s order for a “Helix Ear Cuff in Gold” (which, honestly, doesn’t really seem like Ivanka’s bag), but included a special gift: a card saying they’d forwarded Ivanka’s money to a host of liberal causes, and closed with the hashtag “#thanksbutnothanks.”
The move didn’t go over as well as expected. While there were some supporters, Instagram commenters quickly took the store to task for screening its clientele based on ideology, warning them that they weren’t just “owning” Ivanka Trump, but sending a message to a lot of people who might believe differently than the owners (kind of like a bakery deciding it won’t make cakes for gay weddings).
A few even called on Ivanka Trump to send the ear cuff back.
@ladygreyjewelry do you do the same with all of your customers who don’t share your ideology? I hope@ivankatrump returns the jewelry.
A few complimented Ivanka for staying above the fray and not responding.
Why would you even post this. You both could learn a thing or two about class and grace from Ivanka.
And one even took the store to task for betraying the liberal values of inclusiveness and tolerance.
My friends response to this post, she truly said it best: Ouch ????
Ya know it’s so easy to be nice. I feel it takes extra effort to be mean. I don’t get it. On every level, everywhere….Politics, social media, school, bullies, public… I just mentally can NOT understand or possibly know why people could even feel good about being mean.#practicelovenothate
Ivanka and her husband, of course, have been involved in her father’s presidential campaign, mostly as close advisers. But while Ivanka is rumored to have pushed her father to include women-friendly policies in his platform, her support has mostly been in the background. Until last year, she was a registered, dedicated Democrat who bundled for Cory Booker.
Trump’s “new politics” definitely include a heavy dose of social media bullying, and the women at Lady Grey seem to be taking good notes. So it’s a fair fight: Trump isn’t harmed and Lady Grey jewelry gets to be self-congratulatory.
But celebrity fans who have public political positions may think twice about ordering their gold-plated elbow macaroni earrings.
