Kentucky has elected a Republican state lawmaker who drew widespread criticism for his racist Facebook posts, which included a meme that said “I [heart] being white,” as well as a photo depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as apes.
Dan Johnson—who claimed the posts were satirical, not racist—won the statehouse seat by fewer than 200 votes, unofficial results showed.
In recent weeks, Johnson defied calls to drop out over the Facebook posts from his fellow Republicans. The chair of the Kentucky Republican Party said Johnson’s posts “represent the rankest sort of prejudice in our society,” apologizing to black voters. Johnson’s views “do not, in any way, shape or form, represent the views of the Republican Party of Kentucky,” the GOP chair added.
Johnson’s Facebook is now private.
