For a brief, shining moment, John Kasich was the only man who stood between Donald Trump and the Republican Presidential nomination. But it simply was not to be.
Despite pledging Tuesday night to stay in the race until Donald Trump won the magic number of delegates needed to secure GOP nod, Kasich, who was definitely not on the cusp of winning, well, anything, will suspend his Presidential bid, according to sources close to the campaign.
The Ohio governor cancelled a planned press conference at Dulles Airport Wednesday morning, and has instead scheduled a speech in Ohio for 5 p.m. Wednesday, where he will likely deliver his final remarks. Reportedly, the defiant Kasich was facing pressure from inside the GOP to end his bid and to allow the GOP to push for party unity around the presumptive nominee, Trump.
Kasich, who once called himself the “prince of light,” released a May the fourth “Star Wars Day” ad just this morning, calling himself “the only hope” to beat Democrat Hillary Clinton. It may now go down as the saddest ad in Presidential history.

Kasich, who will retire with fewer delegates than even Marco Rubio, was never quite the political force he wanted to be, even in blue states where his brand of moderate conservatism was supposed to be particularly resonant.
Godspeed, fair Kasich. Godspeed.
