Hillary Clinton loyalists are “bitter” that Barack Obama cost her the election, Mike Allen reports. Team Clinton thinks the former president was more responsible for Hillary’s defeat to Donald Trump than Vladimir Putin or even FBI Director James Comey. They certainly don’t blame the candidate, or themselves.

According to Allen, many Clinton allies think Obama’s reluctance to “come out early and forcefully” with evidence that Russian hackers were interfering in the election was the primary reason for her loss. “We can’t stress enough how upset some Democrats are,” Allen writes. The anger has caused a rift in the Obama and Clinton factions of the Democratic Party that is “making efforts to form a new Trump opposition coalition harder.”

As far as Obama is concerned, the former president is reportedly “befuddled” as to how Hillary managed to lose to Trump, especially given Obama’s own popularity. Obama and his inner circle expected Hillary to win, and didn’t want to be seen as “grandstanding,” or politicizing the Russian hacks.

Obama addressed the issue at his final news conference, arguing that even if his administration had “thumped our chests” about Russian hacking — what the Clintons wanted him to do — it wouldn’t have been very effective.

Knowing the Clintons, they are unlikely to let this go.
