Bernie Bros and other liberal types are fuming over a Politico report on Hillary Clinton’s efforts to win endorsements from prominent foreign-policy hawks Henry Kissinger and Condoleezza Rice, both controversial figures often derided on the left as “war criminals.”
Kissinger is widely despised on the left for his role as National Security Advisor and Secretary of State during the Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford administrations, during which he advocated and carried out an interventionist foreign policy in numerous countries around the world, and supported brutal regimes throughout the Cold War in an effort to combat Soviet influence abroad.
Rice has also been deemed a “war criminal” for her role as Secretary of State during the George W. Bush administration, during which she advocated for the invasion of Iraq. Rice was forced to cancel a commencement address at Rutgers University in 2014 after students complained that allowing her to speak would be the moral equivalent of “encouraging and perpetuating a world that justifies torture and debases humanity.”
Clinton has been criticized by Bernie Sanders supporters and other liberals for her relatively hawkish views on foreign policy, and past decisions such as her vote for the Iraq War and her advocacy of military action in Libya as Secretary of State.
Some liberals and other Hillary critics took to Twitter on Monday to express their displeasure with the candidates efforts to court these “war criminals.”
