Hillary Clinton’s political career may be over, but the failed candidate will suffer one last indignity by attending the inauguration ceremony of Donald Trump, the man who once threatened to throw her in jail.
Dozens of Democratic lawmakers are planning to boycott Trump’s inauguration on January 20. Rep. John Lewis (D., Ga.) has said he doesn’t view Trump as a “legitimate” president.
Angry liberals have cheered these acts of protests, and they’re not too pleased with Hillary (and Bernie Sanders) for refusing to join them. Many fear attending the inauguration will bestow unwarranted “legitimacy” on Trump’s presidency.
“Very disappopinted to see Clinton, Sanders and other progressive leaders attending the inauguration,” wrote feminist author Jill Filipovic. “Why go? Why normalize and validate this?”
“Dear Hillary: I hope History forgets about the email rigmarole. I however hope it remembers you were at Trump’s Inauguration. As a drawback,” wrote another critic on Twitter.
“Boycott Trump. Everybody boycott. Hillary is insane,” an aggrieved social media user lamented. “He is a big mafioso, did not win fairly. Russia helping him.”
A legal analyst with a Twitter account suggested Hillary, who turned 69 in October, should just stay home on Inauguration Day: “Hillary Clinton should boycott the inauguration. Stay hiking in the woods, old girl.”
