Next week’s Republican convention will feature an eclectic lineup of speakers, including UFC president Dana White, former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow, a bunch of Trump employees, the guy whose wife and father were both insulted by Trump, and eccentric gay billionaire (and Gawker slayer) Peter Thiel.
Thiel, who is also a Trump delegate to the convention, is an interesting choice. In some ways, Thiel’s support for Trump makes a lot of sense. Both are billionaires who like to disrupt the sh*t out of the status quo. Both are skeptical of “democracy,” and love to sue people who say mean things about them.
Thiel was recently revealed as the mysterious financial backer behind Hulk Hogan successful defamation suit against the gossip blog Gawker. Thiel’s lawyer is also helping Donald Trump’s shadowy “hair guru” in legal action against the website.
But some critics are wondering why Thiel would associate himself with a party that recently approved a platform with a number of controversial anti-gay provisions. Thiel’s grudge against Gawker began when the site published a series of article essentially outing him as gay.
In any event, Thiel is among the few speakers expected to address the convention that is likely to have anything interesting to say.
