Gary Johnson Promises He Won’t Smoke Pot in the White House

Libertarian Presidential candidate Gary Johnson is still a relative unknown, but according to the latest polls, he’s drawing double digits against Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

But while Johnson might be gaining fans because of his position on legalizing marijuana—it’s a key part of his campaign’s platform—he swears that, should he actually win the White House, he would quit smoking pot (at least for his first term).

Speaking to The Hill, Johnson, who ran a small legal pot empire before running for president and uses the drug recreationally, noted that the nation’s top office is far more important than his extra-curricular activity. “The notion of getting that call at midnight or two o’clock—people need to know there’s a firm voice on the other side,” he said.

He would not, however, expect his constituents to be so restrictive.

Johnson has quite a ways to go before he encounters the choice of whether or not to light up in the Oval Office. So far, only 18% of voters surveyed even realized he was running for president and only 17% realized his experience was as a governor. He needs 15% approval rating overall to make it to the presidential debate stage.
