Barely a week after publicly announcing her split from disgraced former congressman Anthony Weiner, senior Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin is co-hosting a splashy fashion fundraiser for the Democratic Presidential nominee.
The DNC is downplaying Huma’s involvement in tonight’s fundraiser, co-hosted by Vogue Editor-in-Chief and all-round Condé Nast overlord Anna Wintour, for obvious reasons. But she’ll be at Spring Studios in downtown Manhattan for the “Made for History Fashion Show and Rooftop Party” along with a bevy of fashion designers, including Marc Jacobs, Diane von Furstenberg and Jason Wu. (Unkind observers are pointing out the guest list comprises a distinctly stale sartorial-older-statesman crowd and are wondering why no hot young fashionistas couldn’t be enticed to show up.)
Demi Lovato will be performing, and Chelsea Clinton is the special guest, but Hillary herself is unlikely to attend even though she is in New York City.

All eyes will be on Huma, who told last month’s Vogue in a fawning interview, “I have often thought that if I weren’t in politics I would work in fashion.” Tonight, therefore, is ideal terrain for Abedin to set in motion her next career move (if and when the Hillary Clinton machine ever winds down)—if not her next husband.
Meantime, the fundraiser (for which a front-row ticket costs $2,700, while a “Hillsquad Package” of five front-row tickets, VIP reception and rooftop party access comes to $25,000) crowns Condé Nast’s press operation for the Democrats.
In addition to Wintour’s own efforts, Condé Nast’s slavish support for the Democrats has included The New Yorker backing of Hillary and President Obama writing a piece for Glamor on why he is a feminist and guest-editing Wired.

It’s also worth noting that one of Huma and Weiner’s final public appearances was at the Met Gala, which Wintour oversees, last May.
