A female student at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota was allegedly assaulted by a male student who disapproved of her pro-Donald Trump “Make America Great Again” hat. The incident reportedly took place prior to the first presidential debate on Monday night.
The female student was a member of the Gustavus College Republicans. The state affiliate, Minnesota College Republicans, issued a press release condemning the assault.
“College campuses are meant to be places of freedom of speech and diverse opinions without fearing for one’s physical safety,” the group wrote. “In the case we saw last night on Gustavus Adolphus College’s campus, this did not seem to be the case. This is unacceptable.”
The Minnesota College Republican said they expected the college to “come to a resolution on this issue to combat violence on campus towards students with differing opinions.”
A spokeswoman for the group told Campus Reform the female student was
“walking around bothering no one by wearing a Trump hat” at the time she was assaulted. “I wish this was a surprise to me, but it’s not,” the spokeswoman said. “It’s no secret that college students with conservative leaning viewpoints aren’t strangers to this type of thing on campus.”
The “Make America Great Hat” has become a source of great controversial on college campus in the United States and elsewhere. A college student in Canada was recently accused of promoting “hate speech” for wearing a pro-Trump hat on campus.
The incident is in Minnesota is one of several example of anti-Trump violence over the past few days. A man was arrested over the weekend for verbally abusing Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke, a prominent Trump surrogate, during a flight to Charlotte.
