The investigation has been ongoing since at least last year, and is seeking to determine if donations to McAuliffe’s 2012 gubernatorial campaign violated the law, federal officials said. The governor’s attorney told CNN McAuliffe would “certainly cooperate” with the investigation.

Investigators are reportedly looking into McAuliffe’s prior role as a board member of the Clinton Global Initiative, the charity/slush fund established by former President Bill Clinton.
McAuliffe’s ties to the Clintons run deep. He has helped raise millions of dollars for their political campaigns, and even helped finance the purchase of the Clinton’s mansion in Chappaqua, New York, from which Hillary would launch her successful carpetbagging Senate campaign in 2000.

McAuliffe has a reputation as a ruthless political operative, especially when it comes to raising money for Democratic campaigns. He once stopped at a Democratic fundraiser while taking his wife and newborn child home from the hospital, causing his wife to burst into tears.
In related news, McAuliffe recently restored full voting rights to convicted felons.
No wonder the @GovernorVA recently gave ex-felons the right to vote.https://t.co/wPjkXxPj1O
