FBI: Russian DNC Hack Worse Than Expected, and Definitely Russian

The FBI team investigating a hack into Democratic National Convention servers now says that it’s positive the Russians were behind the attack, and that the hack went further than they initially thought.

According to the New York Times, FBI agents have expanded the investigation to include more than 100 personal email accounts for DNC staffers. Intelligence sources told media that hackers were looking to use DNC servers to worm their way into personal accounts, on the theory that staffers used both their business and home accounts interchangeably.

Hillary Clinton campaign staff were definitely on their target list, as were staffers at the DNC and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which helps to coordinate Democratic House races.

More importantly, though, the FBI told the House and Senate Intelligence committees that they are almost certain the attack came from Russia, but they don’t know whether the Russians have been testing the DNC servers for some time, or  the hack was specifically coordinated to impact the Presidential race.

Although most politicos and media outlets had been operating under the assumption that Russia was to blame, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has been insisting, in interviews, that the DNC leak came from “the inside,” recently insinuating that murdered DNC staffer Seth Rich was one of the leakers.

Rich’s family responded Wednesday, chastising those who would seek to use Seth’s death to push an agenda—a group that no doubt includes Assange.

DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz has already lost her job because of the DNC leak, and last week, three staffers who were working with Wasserman Schultz to handicap the Bernie Sanders campaign quietly resigned. Since then, though, Wikileaks hasn’t released anything of note, though they say more is coming.
