Heat Street and our partners at Free Media were following Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson on his visit to New York. The governor came to NYC to accelerate his campaign and do a wave of interviews with national media.

Governor Johnson says that he is not cheap, but he is frugal. He and his small campaign staff stayed in a very modest Holiday Inn in Midtown Manhattan, and they walked and took taxies everywhere. There were no big black limousines, no helicopters and no pretension.

Riding a wave of very successful interviews, Governor Johnson started his day yesterday with an appearance on MSNBC. What happened during that interview was the biggest news he has made since his campaign started, and not for the right reasons.

The governor made a very significant gaffe, but he also thoroughly owned it. When you spend some time with him you realize that that says a lot about the man. He is humble, reasonable, and as he told us “he was born with an overdose of common sense.”

A rough day aside, here is a small face of the man.

Editor’s Note: Gary Johnson’s new e-book, Common Sense for the Common Good: Libertarianism as the End of Two-Party Tyranny,  will be released September 27 as an e-book original by Broadside, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers.
