Chris Christie’s political career is over. Despite ferociously sucking up to Donald Trump, the New Jersey governor was passed over for the VP slot, and couldn’t even get a consolation post in the Trump administration.
Many have speculated that Ivanka Trump’s husband, Jared Kushner, is to blame for Christie’s demise. (As U.S. attorney, Christie prosecuted Kushner’s father and sent him to jail for making illegal campaign contributions.) Other reports suggest Trump was turned off by the Bridgegate scandal.
After being humiliated by Trump, who reportedly made Christie fetch his fast food lunch orders during the campaign, the New Jersey governor has seen his popularity sink to record lows. A Quinnipiac University poll published Tuesday found that just 17 percent of New Jersey votes approve of their governor, compared to 78 percent who disapprove.
That’s the lowest approval rating for any governor in any state that Quinnipiac has recorded in more than two decades of polling. Even Republican voters in New Jersey are getting fed up with the wide-bodied chief executive. Just 39 percent approve of Christie’s job performance, while 53 percent disapprove.
“It’s interesting, in an unfriendly way, to wonder how low Gov. Christopher Christie’s job-approval numbers might drop,” said Quinnipiac assistant director Mickey Carroll.
