Donald Trump has warned he’s so far ahead of his rivals, there will be “riots” if party elders try to challenge his victory at the Republican convention in July.

A day after clinching the contest’s biggest prize so far, Mr Trump declared he was now representing millions of Americans and hit back at the idea GOP elders might still vote against him at the Republican National Convention in July.

“I think you’d have problems like you’ve never seen before,” Mr Trump said.

Mr Trump took to morning TV declaring how he was now representing “a tremendous, many, many millions of people” and that many would not stand for another victor being chosen at the convention if he maintains his lead.

The rules state that a convention can be “brokered” or “contested” if the frontrunner doesn’t get 1237 delegates.

Mr Trump is significantly ahead of his opponents — to the point of being virtually uncatchable — and yet pundits wonder if he will attain the threshold by July.

Mr Trump was confident he’d reach the threshold anyway: “I think we’ll win before getting to the convention, but I can tell you, if we didn’t and if we’re 20 votes short or if we’re 100 short and we’re at 1100 and somebody else is at 500 or 400, because we’re way ahead of everybody, I don’t think you can say that we don’t get it automatically,” he told CNN.

“I think you’d have riots”.

He then added: “I think bad things would happen, I really do. I believe that. I wouldn’t lead it but I think bad things would happen.”
