President Donald Trump was criticized in the media for using the phrase “America First” during his inaugural address last week, but a recent poll shows that most Americans like the slogan.
A Politico/Morning Consult survey published Wednesday found that 65 percent of respondents viewed the “America First” message positively, including half of Democrats and nearly two-thirds of independent voters. Similar percentages voiced support for Trump’s rallying cry to “buy American and hire American.”
The same poll found that almost half of voters (49 percent) had a favorable view of Trump following his Inauguration Day speech, which was riddled with populist overtones. Many in the media described the speech as “dark.” Forty-four percent of poll respondents said they had an unfavorable view of Trump after the speech.
That’s represents a net positive swing compared to polls taken days before the speech, when 46 percent of voters viewed Trump favorably, and 48 percent viewed him unfavorably. It’s one of the largest swings in popular approval since Trump was elected on November 8.
