Thousands will take to the streets in major cities Monday for “Not My President’s Day” rallies, asking Congress to impeach Donald Trump over his “extreme agenda,” but Democratic lawmakers are privately telling top activists that the option isn’t on the table.

According to POLITICO, even though an “Impeach Trump Leadership PAC” has cropped up in recent weeks, and booting the President is at the top of ANSWER Coalition’s – the group organizing President’s Day marches and rallies – list of demands, lawmakers say the right “I” word is ‘investigations.”

“We need to assemble all of the facts, and right now there are a lot of questions about the president’s personal, financial and political ties with the Russian government before the election, but also whether there were any assurances made,” California Rep. Eric Swalwell told constituents.

Unfortunately, Swalwell is one of the few Democrats willing to buck the grassroots, who have made impeachment the cornerstone of their anti-Trump agenda. Not My President Day organizers say they will settle for nothing short of removal from office.

It also doesn’t seem to matter that impeachment proceedings would have to occur in a Republican House and Senate, who would likely be loathe to pursue the issue aggressively.

Some in Democratic leadership, like House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, are trying to walk a fine line, assuring voters that she will pursue impeachment – but not until Donald Trump actually does something. “When and if he breaks the law, that is when something like that would come up. But that’s not the subject of today,” she told a press conference Monday.
