DEA Announces Marijuana Will Stay Schedule 1, ‘No Medical Use Or Purpose’

Decisions like these make you fear for the future of this country — not to mention Malia’s.

The US Drug Enforcement Agency announced that marijuana will remain a Schedule 1 drug, up their with heroin and meth and a notch above oxycodone, a classification for drugs with no medicinal purpose. The decision denies a bid by two governors to reclassify the substance.

Never mind the kids with severe epilepsy who can reduce their seizure counts dramatically with cannabis oil. Never mind the countless studies showing the medicinal benefits of marijuana. Never mind common sense, that maybe a drug like marijuana that kills zero people a year isn’t as dangerous as heroin. The government will continue its idiotic policy of treating weed as a public menace.

Being on Schedule 1, stymies federal research of marijuana and keeps federal sentencing for possession unreasonably high.

And what about former president of the Choom Gang, now president of the United States? Obama could gotten involved but chose not to. (Maybe if Malia had gotten busted he’d have stepped in.)

The advocacy group Marijuana Majority gave a statement to NPR, chiding the president for his administration’s decision.

“President Obama always said he would let science — and not ideology — dictate policy, but in this case his administration is upholding a failed drug war approach instead of looking at real, existing evidence that marijuana has medical value.”

The science is out that marijuana has a multitude of medicinal benefits, yet the federal government still has their heads in the sand. And why? Based on public opinion, it’s politically unwise to oppose marijuana reform. The DEA needs to realize what century we’re in and let the science speak for itself.
