Manning’s lawyer, the ACLU’s Chase Strangio, could not confirm his client’s status to media, but one US official told CNN that military medical personnel “continue to monitor the inmate’s condition,” and that Manning was hospitalized following a suspected suicide attempt.
Manning is currently serving a 35 year sentence for violations of the Espionage Act. While still in the military, Manning downloaded thousands of classified documents from US military servers and passed them to Wikileaks in an effort to subvert the Iraq War.
Then known as Bradley Manning, she received a dishonorable discharge from the US Army and is currently serving her time at Fort Leavenworth military prison. Manning, who was born male, announced that she identified as female after being charged.
