Ash Carter is the U.S. Secretary of Defense, but it wouldn’t be unreasonable for casual political observers to assume that he is actually the President of the United States, given that his job seems to involve doing things like announcing troop deployments and visiting our allies abroad, whereas Barack Obama’s job often seems to consist of little more than hitting the links and playing board games with celebrities.
Carter was especially presidential on Wednesday when he presented Obama with the U.S. Department of Defense medal for distinguished public service at a military base in Arlington, Virginia. Service members applauded as Carter pinned the medal on Obama’s suit jacket. Obama bowed, just like he does when greeting other heads of state.
